Greater Toronto Chess League Executive:

President: Barry Thorvardson
Vice-President: Michael Barron
League Co-ordinator: Caesar Posylek
Director of Communications: Mark S. Dutton
Treasurer: Nicholas J. Varmazis
Secretary: Erik Malmsten

Dear chess enthusiast,

What can the Greater Toronto Chess League do to help you, and any chess group you belong to, meet your goals? How can the GTCL better promote chess in the Toronto area? What vision do you have of the future of chess and what steps can we start taking to get there?

I’m collecting the answers to these questions to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the GTCL, Saturday April 16. You’re invited to attend and contribute in person. We’re also welcoming any volunteers interested in participating in the activities of the GTCL, whether sitting as an executive or being included in email discussions. I think it’s important that all active clubs and organizers be involved. Maybe we need an email list to notify each other of our upcoming events. Mark Dutton has been doing an excellent job of updating the GTCL website. Please check that the information on your club is up-to-date http://www.torontochess.org/ClubsGTCL.htm.

This past year was full of chess activity in Toronto. The Canadian Championship and Women’s Championship had 69 and 15 players. A variety of organizers were involved in the Lotto Bonus weekend tournaments: Barry Thorvardson, Fred Henderson, Martin Jaeger, Bryan Lamb, Maurice Smith, and Larry Bevand with an increased turnout at Labour Day, 140 players. We have six strong teams battling it out in the GTCL League matches. How can we maintain the participation of our chess masters?

Toronto has an amazing group of juniors, what can we do to support them? 16 year old Mark Bluvshtein became a Grandmaster, 13 year old FM Zhe Quan won the Canadian Junior in Calgary and finished second in the recent Ontario Closed. Shiyam Thavandiran, the Ontario High School Champion, was a City TV athlete of the week. Bluvshtein, Thavandiran and Nikolay Noritsyn all received awards from Chess ‘n Math. FM Tomas Krnan tied for first in the Toronto Closed and third at the Canadian Championship. Several Toronto players won their sections at the Canadian Youth Chess Championship: Liam Henry, Angel Xia, Jonathan Tayar, Harris Kaufman, and Arthur Calugar. Several played in the World Youth Chess Championships in Greece. Chess ‘n Math had 154 players in their November Grand Prix and more in the Ontario Chess Challenge. The Grundy Foundation is funding lessons to children who cannot afford them. The Roman Pelts Chess Academy, Oriole, Knights of Chess have regular tournaments and a new junior club, Thunder, was set up by Michael McArthur. David Cohen organized the Todd Southam Memorial at Bayview, an active tournament of six masters versus six juniors. The University of Toronto hosted the Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championship.

Annual senior tournaments have been put on by Martin Jaeger and CFC rated tournaments continue at Bayview and Scarborough, both clubs featured in the CFC’s magazine, Chess Canada Echecs. Casual chess continues at City and many other locations. How can we help non-tournament players find a place to play?

We would love to have your input at the GTCL meeting.

=======================================================================
Hi Execs,

The following is a copy of my post on ChessTalk.  -   please post it on GTCL website Cheers :)
Michael Barron

As a number of people already know, I am planning to run for GTCL President at the AGM on April 16.

I would like to give people an idea of what I will be seeking to do if
elected, and also to look for any ideas that others might have.

For those of you who do not know me, I grew up in Kramatorsk, Ukraine,
learning chess at age 6 from my grandfather. At school age I became the
strongest junior player in my city. As you probably know, in former
Soviet Union there was a very good system for developing chess. As part
of this system talented juniors from all over Soviet Union were
gathered in Moscow in special school where they 5 hours a day were
studying general subjects like in regular high school and 4 hours a day
were studying chess subjects. I was accepted in this special chess
school together with such famous now players and coaches as GM Yury
Dokhoian (coach of Garry Kasparov), GM Evgeny Bareev (coach of Vladimir
Kramnik), IM Georgi Orlov (now resident of Seattle, USA, where he owns
a chess school). After graduating from the Moscow chess school I chose
a Software Developer career and kept chess as my hobby. After
graduating from University I returned back to Kramatorsk and was
actively involved in work of city chess organization. Now this small
city became a chess capital of Ukraine, and such players as Ruslan
Ponomariov, Sergey Karjakin, Kateryna Lahno are well known in chess
world. In the success of Kramatorsk chess there is a part of my work
too.

Since the year 2002 I have been living in Toronto. In 2003 I founded
Antibes Chess Club, which became a winner of the Greater Toronto Chess
League Team competition in 2003/2004 season. Since 2003 I am a CFC
Governor and OCA Director, in 2004 I was elected Vice President of the
GTCL. Now I feel ready to take the leadership in the Greater Toronto
Chess League.

What I wish to accomplish might seem ambitious but in my opinion that
is far, far better than simply treading water and applying quick fixes
to whatever seems to be broken at the moment.

My number one goal would be professionalism in chess organization. It
means better using of our experienced chess organizers, professional
coaches, certified tournament directors for organization and conducting
of various chess competitions.

My second goal would be strengthening of local chess clubs. In my
opinion, namely local chess club is the basis of chess life. Together
with CFC Governor Kevin Pacey we have submitted CFC Motion 2005-25
about rebate for local chess clubs from new CFC membership fees. The
intent of this Motion is - to gain new CFC members and to help local
chess clubs. I hope for support of this Motion.

And my third important goal would be development of junior chess in
Greater Toronto Area. The junior players are our future. Last few years
junior chess was developing quickly in Ontario and in Canada - thanks
to Chess'n Math Association and to dedicated OCA and CFC Youth
coordinator Patric McDonald. But in GTCL we didn't pay much attention
for junior chess. Our last Toronto Junior Championship was held in
1949! As result, a few of our promising juniors simply quit chess. I
believe we should improve quantity and quality of our junior chess
competitions. We probably need a dedicated GTCL officer for this
purpose - GTCL Youth coordinator.

I realize that I have a lot of ideas but I also have a great team of
people already willing to help with these projects. More is always
better, though, and if you think you like what you hear I definitely
would like to hear from you - the more ideas we could consider, the
more people we could get involved - the better results we could achieve
for benefit of chess.

And the most important - we all should act together, compete only over
the chess board, help each other to develop chess. We in Toronto Area
have a lot of experienced chess organizers, arbiters, coaches: Mark
Dutton, David Cohen, Barry Thorvardson, Vladimir Dobrich, Martin
Jaeger, Brian Lamb, Maurice Smith, Ceasar Posylek, Nicholas Varmazis,
Shivaharan Thurairasah, Leslie Armstrong, Roman Pelts, Corinna Wan,
Goran Milicevic, Yan Teplitsky, Jura Ochkoos, Michael McArthur, and
many others. Maybe we not always agree with each other - but it's
impossible: different people are entitled to have different opinions.
But we all could and should do our common business - develop chess for
benefit of all chess lovers. We need respect each other, only then
Canadian society in general would respect chess community and we could
proudly describe ourselves as chess players.

We need a leader who could unite all chess players and organizers,
regardless of their personal contradictions or past conflict of
interests. Everybody could help to develop chess - somebody could
donate their money, somebody could donate their time, somebody could
donate their professional expertise. And we all could benefit from
respectful image of chess.

I am willing and able to do this job.

Cheers :)  Michael Barron

<2000     500
<1800        0
<1600     260
Total  $2,760

For background info:

It was $2,500 before Fall Open which added 20% of Revenues of $2,890 or $578 to make the bonuses $3,078 before payout of $320 to the U1800 category. (We deducted $1,000 or 20% whichever was less.)  The Bonus is now $3,078-320=$2,758.00 which I will round to $2,760.00

It is noted that the U1800 bonus should have been $234 not $320 so prizes are adjusted to even numbers to make up the difference.

Thunder CC/Thavandiran Hospital Fundraiser

Shiyam Thavandiran will give a Simultaneous exhibition to benefit
The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation (registered charity #10808 4419 RR0001) at Thunder Chess Club, 2857 Lawrence Ave. E. #14, Sunday, November 14, 2004 at 12:30pm.

Hospital Fundraiser Report - By David Cohen

National Master Shiyam Thavandiran, the reigning Canadian Grade 6 & Ontario High School Champion,
volunteered his time to take on 20 players (including 19 kids) in a simultaneous chess exhibition at the
Thunder Chess Club in Toronto, on Sunday, November 14.  Michael McArthur donated the use of the Club's
facilities and chess equipment. The effort was all in aid of The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation,
Canadian registered charity # 10808 4419 RR0001(http://www.sickkids.on.ca/foundation/). Each player
paid a $10 entry fee, and this all went to the Foundation. In addition to the $200 raised from the
players, well-wishers donated an additional $160, for a total of $360! Shiyam was able to achieve his goal
of setting new records for our fundraiser for attendance (Kevork Hacat 2003 - 9; Zhe Quan 2004 - 13)
and money raised (2003 - $63; 2004 - $130).

At the board, Shiyam won all 20 games. Not only that, but 17 of the players opted to play Shiyam a second
time, and Shiyam won all of those as well! The whole effort took a mere 2.5 hours. This was hardly
surprising when you consider some of Shiyam's previous accomplishments: winning the 2002 Canadian Boys Under 10 Championship (4th at the World Youth Championships), and 2003 Canadian Grade 5
Championship.

Cost was $10. Info: Michael McArthur (416) 533-8035.   Link:
The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation

This is our third approved fundraiser for The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, registered charity # 10808 4419 RR0001. Thanks to Michael McArthur for hosting this event, and to Shiyam Thavandiran for volunteering his time! Shiyam is aiming to beat the previous records for attendance (13) and money raised ($130).
