William Yuan wcyuan@gmail.com has been appointed the new
Communications Director and Webmaster
Effective September 15, 2007

ANNOUNCEMENT:  The Greater Toronto Chess League Board of Directors is pleased to announce the unanimous appointment of William Yuan as our NEW Communications Director and Webmaster.  William joins the GTCL Board effective September 15, 2007 and will replace Mark S. Dutton, I.A., who has resigned and is moving to Victoria, British Columbia next month.  This volunteer position involves interaction with the Executive Members of the GTCL and the maintenance of the GTCL website.  These duties include compilation of a calendar of comings events, publishing reports of recent results, e-mail advertising announcements.

Mark S. Dutton, I.A. has resigned his position as GTCL Communications Director after over 30 years service with the GTCL (formerly TCA), the OCA and the Chess Federation of Canada.  Mark and Christine Dutton (formerly of the Dutton Chess Club on Bayview) will be relocating to Victoria, British Columbia on October 1, 2007.  William Yuan brings a strong background to this exciting opportunity and has extensive web publishing experience, together with excellent communication skills.  William has recently relocated to Toronto and brings with him a strong desire to join the GTCL Executive team and he will maintain the flagship website of Canadian Chess in the country's largest market - GREATER TORONTO.  Please help us welcome William Yuan to the Greater Toronto Chess community!

In William Yuan's own words .."My background in Computer:    I am a veteran in IT. I have graduated from university in China and get bachelor degree computer science for more than 20 years. Also I finished the master courses of System Science in University of Ottawa in 2005.   Such as HTML,XML,JAVA, DOT NET and other web technology all are very easy to me. I used JavaScript technology to benefit the website of 2003 Canada Open in Kapuskasing.  I also help the Nadeau family to make the live games over the Internet which is the 1st time Canada Open has the live games online. That time it definitely does have Monroi technology in Canada.

My Chess background: I was a NM of China and love to train kids chess. I established Ottawa Youth Chess Club in 2002 and many Ottawa kids got the benefits from there. Some of them already reached the CFC rating around 2200. Those kids like Glen Barber(20 years old boy), Sammy Yao(18 years old boy), Karoly Szalay(14 years old boy), my daughter, Yuanling Yuan (13 years old girl) and Ziyi Qin (Joey)(11 years old boy) frequently play CFC and FQE tournament and many others kids play CMA chess.
A couple of kids, such as Derek Jia, Yuanling Yuan, Karoly Szalay, Glen Barber and Gabriel Brown have represented Canada to play the WYCC since the year 2003."

2003 Toronto Closed RESERVES Champion is dead at 20

R.I.P. GAJANA SRINIVASAN 20 year old is dead -- chess-related tragedy in the news!

--------------------------------------------------
Stabbing turns murder-suicide

Police arrived at an east Toronto apartment building yesterday morning to investigate a possible stabbing but instead they came upon a horrific murder-suicide.
Emergency crews discovered the body of a 20-year-old man sprawled on his back behind the building on 50 Tuxedo Court, near Markham and Ellesmere roads, around 11 a.m. A mangled air conditioner lay several feet away.
