The Report of 2008 TSSCL Team Tournament

To all Coaches, Captains, and players:

Many thanks again to our hosts: Kerry Garnier-Wells and the Northview Heights SS Team.

Below is the report which has been sent to the CFC.
Attached are the following files in html versions:
1. All Sections Team Standings
2. All Sections Standings by School Grade: Senior click here and Junior click here
3. All Sections Standings(Alpha by team-C is Captain) : Senior click here and Junior click here

Please note: The files listing individual players have a lot of mistakes in round 1 pairings.
This was apparently caused by the teams which changed their board order.
Note for next year: Find a way to ensure that teams and coaches understand in advance the importance of ranking players correctly.
The report below which was sent for rating has all round 1 corrected. This took a long time!
I seem to be unable to correct the actual tournament files.

Congratulations to our top teams:

Senior:
1.       Marc Garneau CI (East 1)
2.       William Lyon Mackenzie CI (North 1)

Annual Meeting:  for Conveners, Coaches, Senior Students, and Parents
Wed Apr 30 @ 4 pm at the Catholic Ed Centre, 80 Sheppard Ave E.

Please plan to attend.
We would very much like to have 1-2 reps from every school.

Some discussion was held last Friday concerning the viability of the team swiss system.
The Junior tournament here went fairly well, with Pleasant View playing both Deer Park and Seneca Hill. In the Senior tournament, Marc Garneau did play Mackenzie, but did not play either NTCI or UCC. Mackenzie did play NTCI. In the beginning, this tournament was organised as the league is, by having top teams travel to and fro. Second stage had it run on a Saturday.

We tried different formats. With 8 teams, 2 4-team groups were created. Round-robins were played. The final round had the teams in order from each group face each other. It is impossible to run a single round-robin, which would be the fairest way. Without that, any method will lead to some problems. Ultimately I hope to find a method which will be easier to run. But it probably should have at least 2 people to run it!

Should we return to limiting the tournament to 8 teams? (Top 2 from each region.)
What about the Junior? Will all regions now run a Junior Division to challenge for our beautiful new trophy?

Any suggestions prior to the meeting will be appreciated.
I’ll try to put together a record of discussion and suggestions to aid in the actual discussion and decision at the meeting.

Conveners:
Our current Convener for the West Region, Tony Dodds, has retired from teaching.
Thanks to Mr Dodds for his many years of service as Convener and as Coach of his teams at Fr Henry Carr CHS and Don Bosco CSS.
We are in desperate need of a new Convener for the West Region (former Etobicoke and western North York).

The North Region has a great system in place: Messrs John Biro and Robin McCabe are Co-Conveners.

Chris Field,
President, TSSCL;
Tournament Director.
